The Project Management Unit (PMU) wishes to contract a Research Assistant to support the science activities of component 2 (Improved and innovative implementation, enforcement and monitoring of fisheries management plans and sharing results with SWIO countries) of the Project. The objective of the assignment is to support the Research and Science Specialist to implement the science activities to be undertaken under the component.
The overall responsibilities of the Research Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:
- Organize field work and administrative tasks related to implementing the activities of the science component of the Project.
- Assist the Research and Science Specialist in data management; including but not limited to, ensuring all data generated from the science activities are entered on a regular basis, maintenance of a proper filing system for completed datasheets, establishing and maintenance of a data backup systems, assist in reporting the datasets.
- Assist the Research and Science Specialist in carrying out analysis and reporting of research outcomes.
- Assist in procurement of equipment and preparation of field guides, data sheets, and other materials required.
- Ensure field equipment is in good working condition and maintain an equipment inventory.
- Assist the Research and Science Specialist in preparing and monitoring the workplans and budget
- Conduct literature research and prepare awareness and other materials.
- Maintain an adequate stock of field data sheet logbooks and other equipment required for the activities of the component.
- Assist and work closely with the PMU in arranging workshops/trainings related to the activities of the component.
- Participate and lead the field work and field surveys if needed.
- Obtain, fix, preserve and ship biological and tissue samples and assist in coordination with processing the samples
- Assist the Research and Science Specialist and the PMU in preparing updates and reporting documents to be submitted to the World Bank and the Project Steering Committee.
- Support other donor-funded projects and activities under the Ministry’s mandate.
- Any other task assigned by the Project may be necessary for the performance of the duties for the project.
Qualification and Experiences
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology or Environmental Management.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. A working knowledge in R is an advantage.
- At least three (3) years of experience in relevant field.
- Strong writing, editing and analytical skills and capability of working independently. Fluent in written and spoken English and Dhivehi;
- Ability to interact with multiple staff in the relevant agencies and respond to and liaise with stakeholders from industry and private sector.
- The successful individual must be willing to work for extended periods without direct supervision and travel to islands within the project area.
- Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complexities.
- Should have strong and proactive interpersonal communicative skills, experience in team leadership and participatory management.
