Job Description

Job Summary:

The MEP Engineer (Commercial Kitchen) is responsible for the design, engineering, BOQ preparation, installation supervision, testing, commissioning, and handover of commercial kitchen MEP systems. The scope includes kitchen extraction exhaust systems, make-up air systems, hood canopy systems, LP gas piping installations, kitchen fire suppression systems, and electrical power and control systems related to kitchen operations.

The role requires strong coordination with kitchen equipment suppliers, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams to ensure all systems are delivered efficiently, safely, and according to project requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Kitchen Ventilation & Hood Systems (Mechanical)

  • Design and engineer commercial kitchen ventilation systems including:
    • Exhaust extraction systems
    • Make-up air / fresh air systems
    • Hood canopy systems and accessories
  • Prepare airflow calculations, duct sizing, and fan selection.
  • Develop technical drawings, layouts, and coordination plans.
  • Ensure proper selection and installation of filters, duct accessories, dampers, silencers, and insulation as required.
  • Coordinate duct routing, supports, access panels, and drainage provisions based on site conditions.

2. Kitchen Fire Suppression Systems

  • Coordinate and supervise installation of kitchen hood fire suppression systems.
  • Ensure proper installation of piping, nozzles, detection system, and manual release stations.
  • Coordinate interlocks between fire suppression system and related utilities such as gas shutoff and electrical shutdown.

3. LP Gas Piping Installation

  • Design and supervise installation of LP gas piping systems for kitchen equipment.
  • Ensure proper pipe sizing, routing, valve placement, regulators, and safety provisions.
  • Coordinate emergency shutoff system integration with kitchen ventilation and fire suppression systems.
  • Supervise pressure testing, leak testing, and commissioning activities.

4. Electrical Systems (Power & Control)

  • Design and supervise electrical works related to commercial kitchen systems including:
    • Power supply for kitchen equipment (cookers, ovens, dishwashers, refrigeration, etc.)
    • Power supply for exhaust fans, make-up air fans, and control panels
    • Hood lighting and related electrical accessories
  • Prepare electrical load schedules and equipment power requirements.
  • Coordinate electrical distribution including DB connections, breakers, isolators, cabling, containment, and earthing.
  • Ensure installation of emergency stop switches and safety shutdown controls where required.
  • Coordinate control wiring and interlocks for exhaust fans, make-up air fans, gas solenoid valves, and fire suppression activation.

5. BOQ Preparation & Estimation

  • Prepare BOQ and material take-offs for complete kitchen MEP works including:
    • Hood canopy and ducting works
    • Exhaust and make-up air fans
    • Dampers, grilles, diffusers, and accessories
    • LP gas piping and fittings
    • Fire suppression system components
    • Electrical cabling, trays/conduits, isolators, panels, and accessories
  • Support procurement by reviewing technical submittals, vendor proposals, and technical compliance.

6. Installation Supervision & Site Execution

  • Supervise installation works to ensure compliance with approved drawings and project requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors and suppliers to ensure correct installation methods and proper sequencing.
  • Ensure work quality, proper finishing, and timely execution as per project schedule.
  • Identify and resolve site issues, clashes, and technical challenges.

7. Testing, Commissioning & Handover

  • Supervise testing and commissioning activities for all kitchen MEP systems.
  • Verify proper system performance including ventilation balance, fan operation, gas system functionality, and fire suppression activation.
  • Ensure all interlocks and emergency shutdown systems operate correctly.
  • Prepare commissioning reports, checklists, and handover documentation.
  • Support preparation of as-built drawings and O&M manuals.

Compliance & Best Practice

  • Ensure all design, installation, and commissioning works are carried out in accordance with industry best practices, project specifications, and applicable local and international regulations.
  • Ensure all systems meet safety requirements and authority approval processes as required.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong technical knowledge in commercial kitchen MEP works including:
    • Exhaust extraction and make-up air systems
    • Hood canopy installation and ducting works
    • LP gas piping installation and safety shutdown integration
    • Kitchen fire suppression systems
    • Electrical distribution and control wiring for kitchen equipment
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills with project teams and contractors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.

Software Skills:

  • AutoCAD (Mandatory)
  • Revit MEP (Preferred)
  • MS Excel (BOQ and calculations)
  • MS Office (Reports and documentation)

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / MEP Engineering.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3–7 years experience in MEP project execution.
  • Minimum 2–5 years experience in commercial kitchen projects including ventilation and kitchen electrical coordination.
