MJA along with implementation partners, Internews and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), is preparing to launch the project “Stronger media through enhanced Freedom of Expression and Right to Information” funded by the European Commission under their European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) program. Under this two-year project, MJA in partnership and closely working together with Internews and IFJ will undertake several activities designed to address hate speech, false news and disinformation, digital and physical threats against journalists and to improve professionalization of the media sector by supporting journalists and media outlets in the Maldives.
MJA hereby invites applications, for the below mentioned position, from interested Maldivian candidates.
Tasks and responsibilities:
● Take lead role on planning and implementing the project activities under “Stronger media through enhanced Freedom of Expression and Right to Information” project funded by the European Commission as per project proposals, work plans and budgets submitted and approved by the European Commission
● Coordinate and facilitate support for all Internews and IFJ-led missions that will be undertaken during the project period.
● Take lead role on Institutional strengthening of MJA and be responsible to design, implement and monitor the project activities such as per project proposals, work plans and budgets submitted and approved by the European Commission
● Take the lead role on Monitoring, reporting and communications component of the project to Internews and the European Commission to ensure that project activities are completed on time and in line with donor and fund management requirements
● Draft activity reports, training reports, process documentation, change stories, success stories, anecdotes from project beneficiaries, content for MJA and IFJ social media and websites
● Monitor the expenditure for the project to ensure they are in line with approved budgets and support the admin and finance officer to prepare financial reports
● Oversee the work of Project Coordinator (full-time) and Finance Office (part-time) as their line managers to ensure that all necessary work is completed with proper reporting and documentation
Required Qualification
● Strong project management, research coordination, training delivery, monitoring and evaluation and financial management experience
● A minimum of three years of experience in project management, development communications, trade union activism, advocacy work in labour rights and/or press freedom issues in Maldives
● Above-mentioned experience within media rights advocacy organizations on issues related to trade union activism, gender equity in media, digital organizing, media rights monitoring will be an added advantage
● Excellent communication skills – high proficiency and fluency in Dhivehi and English (written, verbal, reading)
● Demonstrated knowledge and experience with issues impacting press freedom, gender equity in media, digital organising, trade union movement, gender mainstreaming in union and media , internet shutdowns, surveillance, censorship among others
● Understanding of digital security and geopolitical issues in Maldives with the ability to analyse and relate these to press freedom as needed.
● First University Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications/ Development Management/Project Management or any relevant areas
