Job Description

General Requirements

• Diploma or degree in a related field
• Must be certified medical coder (CMC) or certified professional coder (CPC) from an accredited coding institution
• Minimum of 2 years in a similar position in a medical record service or in a hospital environment
• Excellent listening and time management skills
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel)

 

Job Specification

• Advance knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques and surgical procedures; anatomy and physiology; major disease processes; pharmacology; and the metric system to identify specific clinical findings, to support existing diagnoses, or substantiate listing additional diagnoses in the medical record.
• Knowledge of clinical information policies and guidelines with particular reference to issues regarding confidentiality and medico legal matters.
• Advance knowledge of medical codes involving selections of most accurate and description code using the ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS coding conventions.
• Skill in correlating generalized observations/symptoms (vital signs, lab results, medications, etc.) to a stated diagnosis to assign the correct ICD-10-CM code.
• Advance knowledge of medical codes involving selection of most accurate and descriptive code using the CPT codes for billing of third party resources.
• Extensive knowledge of official coding conventions and rules for assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes.
• Knowledge of Electronic Health Record in order to analyze encounters and notify providers of data that needs corrections, notifications and templates.
• Must be able to liaise with clinicians on a professional level and have good interpersonal skills.
• Maintain and promote patient confidentiality within the hospital. Provide awareness, training and guidelines for the protection of clinical information belonging to any guest or patient of Tree Top Hospital
