About Us

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment is mandated with the provision of major essential public services to all the citizens of the Maldives. Its core responsibilities encompass the formulation of policies and the regulation of critical sectors, including water and sanitation, waste management, and energy. The Ministry also leads national and international efforts to address climate change, while ensuring the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of the Maldives’ natural environment, thereby safeguarding its ecological integrity, natural heritage, and biodiversity for present and future generations. In addition, the Ministry is also committed towards improving the quality of life of all Maldivians through the promotion of balanced and inclusive development that integrates economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social well-being. To this end, the Ministry works to strengthen local participation across relevant sectors, minimize and manage the environmental and social impacts of tourism, and enhance the global standing, value, and long-term sustainability of Maldivian tourism.
